I learned that PDF is the cornerstone file format for prepress and print production workflows. I explored the numerous settings available when creating PDFs and discovered how to choose the right options for different workflows and printing processes. I gained insight into whether the Adobe CC "canned" PDF presets are sufficient for my needs. The course covered various presets and settings in detail, providing a solid understanding of how each option affects PDF creation and output.
I learned a comprehensive understanding of expanded gamut printing, including traditional ECG and digital print applications. The training provided valuable insights into how ECG works and included instructor-led demonstrations that enhanced my knowledge of ECG applications. I gained skills to effectively leverage the technology behind this exciting trend in print.
I learned that quickly and effectively evaluating color is critical in any role within print production. Whether as a customer, designer, CSR, production worker, or sales rep, it's essential to visually identify color problems and communicate them accurately to both internal and external customers. The course taught me how to methodically evaluate color visually and express my observations using precise color terminology, all aimed at reducing rework and turnaround time.
I learned that digital enhancement involves applying spot colors, spot varnish, dimensional varnish, foil, and other effects to printed materials. I discovered that a consumer's experience extends beyond just visual elements; it also engages other senses, including touch. For customers, it's crucial to capture attention and elicit a response. Custom pieces featuring varnish, foil, white ink, and other digital effects create a strong connection and add significant value to printed materials. The course provided insights into various digital enhancement options that cut through marketing noise and taught me how to create these files for print.
I learned that Print 101: Introduction to the Printing Industry is specifically designed for newcomers or anyone looking to refresh their knowledge of the printing industry. The course provides a comprehensive overview of print production workflow through a mix of eLearning courses, video demonstrations, and learning assessments. I discovered how printed jobs are produced from design to the final product and gained a better understanding of printing industry terminology and lingo, enabling me to communicate more effectively on production-related topics.
I learned that this course equips participants with the knowledge and skills to accurately identify, measure, and reproduce spot colors for digital print production. I gained an understanding of the necessary steps for managing spot colors in digital printing and how to effectively apply them to printing hardware and software to achieve the best and most accurate results.
I learned that great print design combines visual appeal and technical precision. The course on Print Production for Designers revealed the lifecycle of a printed job and explored what it takes to design and build files that print, fold, trim, and finish correctly. The good news is that you don’t need to be an expert prepress operator; understanding core production concepts, software tips and tricks, and knowing the right questions to ask your printer is sufficient. Through real-world visual examples and hands-on exercise files, I was able to enhance my designs by considering the most critical aspects of print production for my next project.
